URBAN OUTFITTERS-ANTHROPOLOGIE-FREE PEOPLE RICHARD HAYNE

With the way the economy is going, people are more aware of "thrifty" shopping. Stores like Wal-mart are seeing their sales increase due to their lower price points even though most of the merchandise is from outside of the U.S. Even though Americans are losing their jobs to countries overseas they still continue to spend their money at these stores that don't support products made in the states. Urban Outfitters is known for their lower price point merchandise as well as their "coolness" factor along with sister companies, Free People and Anthropologie. Richard Hayne is the CEO and owner of these companies and keeps a low profile due to his conservative politics. He's a known supporter of former Republican senator, Rick Santorum, and known to be "Cheneyesque" behind closed doors. So, as money gets tighter and we are more aware of what, how, and where we spend our hard earned money, let's all speak with our dollars by spending it with companies that coincide with who we are as a people and as a community. It may be easier to shop at one of these stores due to their easy access but take the extra time to think before you spend.

Great point to consider! I just want to throw in my two cents though: Urban Outfitters also supports small businesses. Sounds crazy, but it's true.

I'm just a small-time artist, and the big UO contacted me last year about selling my glassware in their stores. I couldn't produce the large quantities they needed, so we worked out a licensing contract. I got paid up front, and my designs are now in stores all over North America, which is something I've never been able to do on my own.

I would make more money if customers bought directly from my website, but I can't beat the exposure I've been getting.

If you choose not to support a business based on their owner's politics, than please support the local artisans in your area instead, or search out some new ones online!

Yes, but the money they make off your designs goes back to the company who then goes to the policies and politics that the owner contributes to-so in fact you're supporting his politics as well. Is that worth it to you? If that's how you want to make your money so be it.

They are notorious for 'using' artists' for their talents and creativity while paying next to nothing for it. Exposure is one thing. Being paid a fair wage/ price is another...
